Last of the old-style air tickets

Mumbai: On May 31, 2008, the day the last paper ticket is printed, travelling on a plane will cease to exist as we know it.
The Geneva-based International Air Transport Association (IATA) is ready to switch over to a completely paper-free, e-ticket only system from June. At present, IATA represents a majority of airlines, with over 240-member airline carriers from around the world, including Air India and Jet Airways in India.
ATA has been for supplying paper tickets to member airlines since 1926. In December 2007, IATA ordered its last lot of 1.5 million paper tickets from specialised printers to supply to the 60,000 accredited IATA travel agents across the world.
Giovanni Bisignani, IATA’s director general and CEO, says, “This was an obvious move, as e-ticketing went up from 16 per cent in June 2004 to 84 per cent in December 2007. Of the 400 million air tickets issued by IATA members, only 64 million are actually printed on paper, and we plan to reduce this number too, by going completely paper-free.”
