More planes to be cramped in IGI airspace

New Delhi: In a bid to accommodate ever-increasing air traffic at these choked airports, the aviation ministry is working on reducing the horizontal distance between two approaching aircraft from the current range of over 5-7 nautical miles (9-13km) to 3 nautical miles (5.5km). The move, in accordance with global norms, will substantially increase the hourly capacity of these airports, which is currently an average of 35 movements.
Airports Authority of India chairman K Ramalingam said: "We are working on procedures to implement the new system under which airports’ handling capacity will increase. We hope to do this at the earliest. Air traffic controllers are being trained for this job."
