New Delhi: Tenders for a dedicated air operator to service the North East Region are expected to be issued in a month or two. The air operator will connect all major cities in the region and will set up a hub preferably in Guwahati. The Ministry of North East (MoNE) and North East Council (NEC) have been pressing for a dedicated air operator in North East Region.
Sidhu Committee with Dr. S S Sidhu, Governor of Manipur and now also of Mehgalaya at the helm was formed at the behest of North East Council to explore the possibility of a dedicated regional air operator for North East. It is currently redrafting and revising some of the clauses of the open tenders that will be issued through a public notice for air operators in a month or two. The final meeting of the Sidhu Committee will take place in New Delhi on April 28, 2008 to decide the final draft of the tenders to be issued for bidding.
The Committee wants the airline that bags the tender to connect the capitals of the seven states in North East Region. It wants the airline to operate either daily or on alternate days. Some of the destinations in North East Region are already being serviced by regular airlines but the Committee is keen on intra-region connectivity, as there are about 11 operational airports and one or two more coming up in the next three years.
