NEW DELHI: You may have to pay through your nose while flying abroad, with airlines planning massive hikes in fuel surcharge. The levy could be as high as Rs 7,500 for fliers to the US and Rs 4,000 for those travelling to European destinations such as the UK. The quantum of fare hike would be destination-specific.
Taking the lead in hiking fuel surcharge is Air India. While the national carrier is planning an additional fuel surcharge, other major carriers like Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific are also planning similar hikes. Some airlines such as SriLankan are hiking basic fares rather than levying a fuel surcharge.
The hike will be over and above the current fuel surcharge which stands at Rs 7,769 in the case of Jet Airways’ flight from Mumbai to New York. On the Delhi-London sector, Jet levies a fuel surcharge of Rs 4,896. The hike in surcharge would vary from airline to airline and sector to sector.
