Airport CCTV had conked out during hit-and-run

MUMBAI: It has been over 40 days, and even after interrogating 126 people, the Sahar police are yet to identify the person responsible for killing a loader employed with Cambata Aviation. The fact that a CCTV had stopped functioning at the time of the incident has complicated matters.
On March 30, Dnyaneshwar Appa Kunte, 40, a loader with Cambata Aviation, a ground handling agency was killed by a speeding passenger coach. Kunte was loading the baggage on a Kenya Airways flight at bay no. 46 of the International Terminal 2A at Sahar. An Air India (AI) passenger coach allegedly dashed into the luggage trolley, killing Kunte on the spot. The coach driver allegedly fled without being seen by anyone.
What has also puzzled the cops is that a CCTV at the bay, which was supposed to record the incident, had stopped functioning for exactly 16 minutes. “The CCTV stopped working at 2.26am and started working at 2.42am, after the driver allegedly escaped from the scene,” said a senior police officer from Sahar police station. “The airport officials say the CCTV was automatically switched off by their computer system. However, it was only by 3.15am that the doctors at the airport declared Appakunte dead.”
