Bomb threat grounds Jet Airways plane in Toronto

VANCOUVER: An Indian jet leaving Toronto's Pearson Airport was grounded Monday night after a bomb threat was called in to Crime Stoppers.
Peel Regional Police confirmed Thursday that Jet Airways Flight 225 was the recipient of an anonymous threat less than two hours before it was to depart for Chennai, India, via Europe.
Const. Adam Minnion said the threat, which came at 6:21 p.m. Monday, had to be checked out, meaning the aircraft was searched thoroughly and passengers had to wait until Tuesday for their flight.
The highly successful Jet Airways is a privately owned Indian company that flies daily from Toronto, through London and Brussels and on to India. It is currently the only Indian airline with scheduled flights to Canada.
Minnion said it was clear early on that the threat was likely not credible, but that investigators still had to ground the flight and do a thorough investigation.
"We have systems in place to deal with them." He could not say how many police officers were assigned to check out the bomb threat, or whether the caller claimed any motive for the alleged threat. Nor could he say how many similar threats -- if any -- had been received by Jet Airways or any other airline leaving Pearson in recent months.
