Calif. men charged in separate airline, embassy threats

Sacramento: Two Sacramento-area men were indicted Wednesday on federal charges of making separate bomb threats, one against Delta Airlines and the other against the U.S. Embassy in Italy.
Apun Mahapatra is charged with threatening to destroy an aircraft. The 31-year-old Sacramento man allegedly called a Delta operator May 1 to say that a plane leaving Mumbai, India, for Atlanta should be canceled because of a "hijack" and "bomb blast."
He apparently had a dispute with someone he thought was on the plane, said Lauren Horwood, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's office in Sacramento.
Carlos Ramos, 22, is charged with sending an October 2007 e-mail threatening to destroy the embassy in Rome.
"There's going to be a lot of dead people when the building explodes," read his warning, according to federal prosecutors.
He lives in Dixon, a farming community and suburb between Sacramento and San Francisco.
Security was increased for the Delta flight and at the embassy because of the separate threats.
