Meet on B’lore airport today

New Delhi: Two crucial meetings related to the civil aviation sector will take place in New Delhi on Monday. The more crucial of the two meetings will be the one between civil aviation secretary Ashok Chawla, accompanied by senior ministry officials, and representatives of the Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL), the developers of the new Bangalore greenfield airport.
Representatives of BIAL are likely to present their view on the government’s request to BIAL to agree to the operation of small aircraft (80-seaters and below) from the old Bangalore airport even after the new one becomes operational in the last week of May. As per the concession agreement signed between the government and BIAL four years ago, the old airport was to be closed for commercial purposes once the new one became operational. However, the government made the request to BIAL recently since the Bangalore high court had suggested that the government hold talks with BIAL to explore the possibility of the old airport being retained for commercial purposes even after the new one is inaugurated.
