New Delhi: The spat between planning commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia and civil aviation minister Praful Patel over modernisation work of Delhi airport has caught the Left’s attention. The CPM has asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to review the GMR-led consortium’s performance vis-a-vis the operation, management and development agreement (OMDA) and sought penal action.
The Left, which has been critical of Mr Ahluwalia from the time he was appointed deputy chairman of the plan panel, is now using his remarks about delay in the modernisation work at Delhi airport to remind the government that the Airport Authority of India (AAI) had proposed a MoU with a time schedule to complete the job within 48 months from the day of approval of plan. “By this time the job of modernisation would have been over. Unfortunately this was spurned and airports privatised on the pretext of rapid upgradation of Delhi airport,” CPM’s Dipankar Mukherjee said in a letter to the Prime Minister.
