Thiruvananthapuram: The construction works of the new terminal of Thiruvananthapuram Airport were affected following demand for higher loading charges by loading workers of Chakai locality.
Several loads of cement could not be even unloaded owing to the issue. According to sources, Vishal construction firm which is carrying out the works had even offered to pay Rs 4 per packet cement even though the government approved rate was only Rs 2 per packet.
The workers are however demanding benefits like bonus, which the company sources says that they could not afford.
Moreover, it is also alleged that the headload workers are demanding noku kooli as compensation for mechanised construction activities.
State Labour Department sources said that they could not intervene in the issue since the work is going on at the premises of Airports Authority of India.
