Air hostess suicide: Pilot held, charged with abetment

Mumbai: The Mumbai Police today arrested a co-pilot with IndiGo and charged him with abetting the suicide of air hostess Sucheta Anand—who worked for the same airline—on Saturday night.
The Santacruz police booked Arjun Menon, a Powai resident, for abetment to suicide after recording the statements of 25-year-old Sucheta’s parents.
Sucheta’s body was found hanging from the ceiling fan of room no 311 in Hotel Palm Grove on June 7. According to the Santacruz police, Sucheta, a resident of the East of Kailash locality in New Delhi, arrived in Mumbai in the evening on Friday, June 6 and checked into the room booked by the airline after flight duty.
The police said Menon (30) was with her on the day — Saturday — she committed suicide.
“In the evening, the attendant of the room knocked on the door for cleaning the room. When there was no response, the management opened the room with a duplicate key and found Sucheta hanging from the ceiling fan,” said Senior Police Inspector Dilip Gaikwad of Santacruz police station.
Gaikwad added: “From what we have gathered so far, Sucheta and Menon, who is a divorcee, may have had a relationship. On the day she committed suicide, Menon was with her in her room from morning till evening and two hours after he left, she committed suicide. This suggests that she was probably pushed to kill herself as a result of whatever transpired between them.”
Sucheta married Sumeet Virmani, a Delhi-based bank employee, around two years ago. The couple were going through divorce proceedings for the past six months in a family court in Delhi. Gaikwad said Sucheta had filed a case of dowry harassment with the Delhi Police against her husband.
