Consultant for developing non-operational airstrip

Mumbai: The government is likely to appoint a consultant for conducting a techno-feasibility report on the development of 325 non-operational airstrips in the country, a top aviation industry official said today.
"The consultant (a consortium of consultants) for carrying out a technical-feasibility report for the development of 325 air-strips will be appointed by this month end," Airports Authority of India's Executive Director (Key Infrastructure Projects), V K Kalra, told reporters on the sidelines of the Aviation Outlook Summit here.
The government had recently invited expressions of interest from consultants for feasibility studies to identify airstrips out of 325 non-operational airstrips, whcih could be made operational again.
The study is to be conducted on airports and airstrips that are either privately-owned or with State governments, the Army or Indian Air Force.
Some of these airstrips need extensive development while some others do not require much work, he said.
Asked about the investment that would be required to develop these airstrips, Kalra did not give any consolidated figures but said, "On an average Rs 40-crore will be required to develop one such airstrip."
