West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi and sought to expedite the clearance of modernisation work of the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata. A decision on modernisation of the airport was taken by the West Bengal government in April 2007. Bhattacharjee was in the capital on May 31 to attend the two-day Central committee meeting of the Communist Party of India – Marxist (CPI-M).
A proposal was submitted to the Airports Authority of India, which in turn, handed it over to the Pre-Investment Board in August 2007. An Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG) gave the green signal to the proposal in October 2007 and the Planning Commission approved the revamp of the airport in December 2007.
The Pre-Investment Board has cleared the Rs 1,942.5 crores project to modernise the airport. The work on revamping the airport is likely to begin in a couple of months. The Airports Authority of India will be implementing the project. It will now be taken by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs for consideration.
The idea behind the modernisation drive is to have world-class airport and as such the Airports
