New Delhi: A high-level meeting of several Union government secretaries presided over by the Cabinet secretary on Tuesday approved a proposal to hike the number of immigration counters at New Delhi IGI airport from 56 to 100. The decision was taken as part of the government’s efforts to decongest Delhi airport which has been beset with problems of over-crowding and long queues in the wake of the modernisation work and construction activities taking place at the airport.
The Union secretaries also decided to increase the deployment levels of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel at the Delhi airport. The CISF is tasked with protecting several airports across India including the New Delhi IGI airport.
Recently, the Delhi International Airport Ltd. (DIAL), the operators of the Delhi airport, had been pulled up by deputy chairman of the Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia for the discomfort being faced by passengers at the airport. DIAL officials had then stated that there was a need for more personnel from the bureau of immigration (that functions under the Union home ministry) and personnel from the CISF (which is also under the Union home ministry) at the Delhi airport to reduce long queues of passengers. The meeting of secretaries on Tuesday was also attended by the Union home and civil aviation secretaries.
