New Delhi: Kanu Gohain, Director General of Civil Aviation, has been given an extension for two months to facilitate the formal appointment of and take over by Naseem Ahmad Zaidi.
Zaidi, who is currently India's representative at the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), has been named the next chief of the Directorate by the Civil Aviation Ministry.
However, his nomination is subject to clearance by the Appointments Committee of the Union Cabinet, which is likely to meet in a couple of weeks, official sources said.
To fill the time gap, Gohain was yesterday asked to continue for two more months, the sources said.
Gohain's successor is a Joint Secretary in the Civil Aviation Ministry. He is an Uttar Pradesh cadre officer of the 1976 batch.
Gohain, who was to have superannuated last year, has been on extension due to a delay in selecting a suitable successor. His second-in-command, Joint Director General A K Chopra, does not fulfil an essential requirement of completing two years in his present post to be elevated to the top job.
Zaidi is presently posted at the Montreal headquarters of the ICAO.
