Egyptair exploring additional frequency to India

Cairo: Egyptair, which was formally inducted as the 21st member of Star Alliance here Friday, proposes to increase its frequency to Mumbai and is looking at New Delhi as another destination in the country. “We are currently flying four times a week to Mumbai. Looking at the traffic, we propose to make it five times a week,” Tawfik Assy, chairman and chief executive of Egyptair, said minutes after the carrier was formally inducted into Star Alliance.
“We also want to de-link our India operations from the one to Kuala Lumpur and are looking closely at New Delhi as the next destination in India,” Assy told IANS at the Cairo International Airport here.
The current frequency is from Cairo to Kuala Lumpur via Mumbai.
He said his carrier was looking forward to Air India joining Star Alliance, adding that this would open up many more avenues not just to link Africa with India but also look beyond bilateral pacts.
Air India is expected to join the alliance next year.
According to Star Alliance chief executive Jaan Albrecht, Air India fitted well with his organisation’s strategy of addressing “white spots” on their route network with the best possible carrier as a member.
