Pune: German aviation group Lufthansa is expanding operations in India on all fronts. Having introduced its first, nonstop , all-business class six-day a week flight from Munich to Pune, the global aviation major is expanding its catering and cargo services in the country, apart from adding more flights out of Mumbai and Kolkata.
It is also looking for an Indian aviation partner to offer private jets, a service it offers its business and first class passengers in Europe.
“The Lufthansa private jet service is an extension we offer to our business and first class passengers. It allows them to reach the thousands of smaller European airports where widebody aircraft cannot..,” Lufthansa German Airlines’ director, South Asia, Werner Heesen, said.
The Indian market is a sustainably profitable sector for Lufthansa, Mr Heesen noted, pointing to the fact that the country generates 22-23 % of its Asia Pacific revenues, behind Japan but ahead of China.
Positioned as the world’s biggest airline with a focus on the premium sector , Lufthansa is expanding other categories of its businesses, too. So, having moved to the new airports at Hyderabad and Bangalore, where it has it just expanded its catering capacities, it will add more destinations.
Lufthansa’s all business class, nonstop flight from Munich to Pune, which began from July 2, will open up other international destinations, including nine in the US. It will allow travellers boarding in Pune to reach the US the same day.
