Orissa demands re-introduction of AI flights to TN

Bhubaneswar: Orissa government on Tuesday asked the Centre to re-introduce the Indian flight between Bhubaneswar and Chennai and direct private airlines to start service between Orissa and Tamil Nadu.
The Air India flight IC-541 and IC-542 operating in Chennai-Bhubaneswar-Kolkata and Kolkata-Bhubaneswar-Chennai route was stopped from May 16, official sources said.
Orissa's chief secretary Ajit Kumar Tripathy said stoppage of service had severely affected south-bound tourists, industrialists, businessmen, patients and students from Orissa.
In a letter to the Civil Aviation secretary, Tripathy pointed out that there was apparently no reason to stop flights on the route.
The service was profitable for the airlines, Tripathy said noting that as many as 13,037 people, including 535 foreigners had travelled during 2007.
