Airlines get grace period to pay outstanding landing charges

Mumbai: Major domestic air-carriers have earned a reprieve from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on the issue of non-payment of landing and parking charges at the Mumbai airport cumulatively amounting to over Rs 1,000-crore.
"We have given them a grace period to deposit the money," a senior AAI official told the media on Friday.
The official, however, did not divulge the time-frame or any other details. It is understood that while national air-carrier, Air India, owes Rs 500 crore to the AAI, private air carriers, Jet Airways and Kingfisher owe around Rs 395 crore and 100 crore respectively as landing and parking fees.
"One airline was even told that if it did not pay the amount by July 31, it would be allowed to fly only on pay-and- fly basis. However, now even that air-carrier has been given a reprieve," the official said.
When contacted, a Kingfisher Airline official said that the airline was in compliance with the settlement terms as are negotiated from time to time.
