New Delhi: The fortunes of the beleaguered commercial aviation sector, which saw a negative growth in passenger traffic this June, finally seem to be looking up. Latest traffic data compiled by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation indicates that while passenger traffic has fallen in July too, the drop has been only minor compared with the same time last year.
Scheduled domestic carriers collectively carried around 31 lakh passengers in July. In the first seven months of this year, the carriers together carried 258.61 lakh passengers. July saw full service airlines like Air India, Jet Airways and Kingfisher registering an increase in their domestic market shares.
While Air India carried 5.56 lakh passengers in the domestic sector, Jet Airways flew 7.17 lakh and Kingfisher 4.69 lakh. No frill carrier IndiGo grew steadily to catch up with Air Deccan, carrying 3.20 lakh compared with 3.45 lakh by the latter.
Air India (domestic), Jet, Kingfisher, JetLite and Paramount increased market share from 16.4 per cent, 21.2 per cent, 14.3 per cent, 8.1 per cent and 1.3 per cent respectively in June to 18.3, 23.5, 15.4, 8.3 and 1.6 per cent in July. IndiGo’s market share was 10.5 per cent, SpiceJet’s 8.4 per cent, GoAir at 2.5 per cent and MDLR at 0.22 per cent.
