Airlines offer cheaper fares

New Delhi: With soaring air fares putting off passengers, airlines are now finding ways to woo them back with cheaper fares in the form of attractive "apex fares".
For instance, leading private carrier Jet Airways and its "value-based" carrier Jetlite have both announced apex fare schemes on several of their domestic routes. Jetlite has announced "attractive 14-day apex fares" for passengers that, it promises, will lead to "substantial savings (for passengers) over regular published fares on the applicable routes".
The bookings for these apex fares have to be made at least 14 days prior to the date of departure. Airlines are bringing out these innovative schemes amid indications that travellers, especially on budget airlines, are now reverting to travelling by trains due to soaring air fares for the past several months. Aviation domestic market figures released recently show a steady decline in passengers travelling by air.
As an official of low cost-carrier SpiceJet said, "There have been indications that those travelling by air on low cost carriers to visit family and friends are now again travelling by train." But there could be some more good news for passengers. With the global prices of crude oil dipping in recent days, state-owned oil firms could lower the price of aviation turbine fuel towards the end of the month.
