Panjim: The Governor of Goa, Dr S S Sidhu today strongly advocated the need for a world-class airport in Goa to boost tourism in the State.
In his address at the Goa Tourism Meet 2008, Dr Sidhu said “if Bangalore, Hyderabad and Cochin can have airports on the PPP model so can Goa for its future growth”, adding “for growth of tourism, thrust has to be laid on upgradation of infrastructure and facilities”.
Pointing out to the possibility of the co-existence of two airports in the State, the Goa Governor opined that Dabolim airport which is slated for expansion can cater to domestic travel while the new airport could cater to charter and international flights.
“There’s plenty to share between both airports”, he said adding that the State can think of better connectivity modes in addition to the existing National Highway 17-A.
Addressing captains of tourism industry, he further explained the need for a cargo complex — an important segment of aviation — that Goa can develop to cater to the Western coast.
Dr Sidhu also highlighted the need for promoting eco-tourism, leisure and heritage tourism pointing out to the bounty of natural and human resources to develop tourism beyond the sun, sea and sand.
Dr Sidhu also strongly mooted the need for branding of Goa as a tourist destination, of having a code of Tourism Ethics and community participation to make the State a tourist destination par excellence.
