Nationwide strike hits aviation operations

Mumbai: Operations in the banking, insurance, aviation and telecom sectors were disrupted on Wednesday after trade unions affiliated to the Left parties went on a nationwide strike to protest against what they call "anti-labour", "anti-people" and "neo-liberal" policies. According to trade union leaders as many as eight million workers had joined the agitation.
Airport employees went on a 12-hour strike on the issues of privatisation of government airports and to demand wages. Hundreds of Airport Authority of India (AAI) employees staged a demonstration at domestic, International and cargo terminals at the Indira Gandhi International airport in New Delhi, demanding a better pay and job security of the AAI employees.
Passengers were left stranded, particularly in Left-ruled states like West Bengal, Kerala and Tripura. Kingfisher Airlines and its affiliate Deccan Aviation have canceled at least 15 flights to and from Kolkata. Other airlines like Jet Airways, Indigo, SpiceJet and JetLite too have canceled some flights. The Indian Air Force on a very short notice has deployed 250 skilled personnel to maintain safety and fire services at 21 airfields across the country.
