Airport Evacuees on protest at Bajpe

Mangalore: The evacuees of the Airport expansion project at Bajpe held a demonstration at the Airport demanding adequate compensation for those who have been evicted during the expansion of the airport. The evacuees have been supported by the Dakshina Kannada unit of Karnataka Dalita Sangharsha Samithi.
During the day long dharna in front of the Airport many leaders of the evacuees and that of the Samithi addressed the gathering. In his address Manjappa Putran, district convenor of the samithi, said that the evacuees have been given a paltry sum of Rs 250 per each cent of land taken away from them in 1989. Lands were acquired from Malavoor, Adyapady and Kenjar villages.
Each family was also given a small amounts ranging of Rs 50,800 to Rs 70,000 towards the rehabilitation package. Puthran demanded that the evacuees should be paid Rs 1 lakh towards the rehabilitation package. This sum should be given from retrospective period he added. The demonstrators also demanded that the Airports Authority of India should employ atleast one person per family that has lost lands. In the case of them not being employable each family should be given a compensation of Rs 5 lakhs Puthran added.
