Fixed time limit for new airports

New Delhi: The process of clearance for setting up new airports in the country will be faster now as the civil aviation ministry has fixed a time limit of six months for site clearance and ‘in principle’ approval for the work from the date of application.
This fixed time limit is part of the new guidelines for approval of proposals for setting up of greenfield airports, which were finalised today by the civil aviation ministry.
A steering committee has been constituted to coordinate and monitor the various clearances required for setting up of greenfield airports.
Under the new guidelines, all proposals for setting up of airports, in whichever category, will be routed through the steering committee. The civil aviation ministry will serve as the secretariat of this steering committee and will be responsible for processing proposals received by it.
These guidelines will apply to the setting up of all airports, heliports and upgradation of airfields. However, airports set up for private use will not be subjected to these guidelines.
The proposals, received in a prescribed format for site clearance, will be forwarded to the Airport Authority of India (AAI) and Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for their comments.
AAI and DGCA would undertake site visits based on which they would submit their report to the steering committee. The civil aviation ministry on the basis of the report submitted by the AAI and DGCA will grant site clearance.
Proposals that need to be referred to the civil aviation ministry and the Central government will require time beyond the six-month time limit.
