Nagpur: Air passengers of Kingfisher's (Deccan) Mumbai-Nagpur flight had a close shave on Tuesday evening when one engine of the aircraft developed a technical snag when it was on its way to the city.
A few minutes after it took off from Mumbai, one of the engines developed some problem and the pilot immediately made an announcement that the aircraft is flying on only one engine and could meet with a mishap. The pilot's announcement and some turbulence created panic among passengers.
One of the passengers, requesting anonymity, confirmed the announcement made by the pilot. "He asked us to tie our seatbelts. Most thought that this would be their last journey," he said. "Thirty minutes after the pilot made the announcement, the aircraft landed safely in Nagpur."
Strangely, the pilot did not seek permission for emergency landing from the Nagpur Air Traffic Control nor did he inform officials of the major snag, according to a senior Airports Authority of India official.
A Kingfisher Airlines official at Nagpur too chose to deny the incident. According to him, if the plane had indeed developed a technical snag in mid-air, the pilot would have alerted the ATC and sought permission for emergency landing rather that creating panic among passengers. The aircraft landed safely at Nagpur airport and took off for Mumbai at its scheduled departure time.
