Space crunch affects airport courier terminal

Chennai: All is not well at the Common User Courier Terminal at the city's airport, the first of its kind in the country. Shortage of space to store consignments detained by the customs for reassessement and high rates slapped on export consignments have become major problems.
The courier firms using the terminal have demanded that a smoother and much efficient system be put in place.
They have complained that the existing 2,500 square metre space is not adequate to handle the 1,000 tonnes of shipment that pass through the terminal every month. "The available space and staff are sufficient only to handle 400 tonnes," said a courier company official.
Consignments detained for reassessment by the customs are stacked one over the other , often out in the open. "This causes chaos and many a time cleared consignments of a company are inadvertently taken away by another agency thinking they are part of its batch," said a member of the Association of Express Industry of South India (AEISI), the body of courier companies .
