Father seeks ‘framed’ aeronautical engineer son’s release from Tihar

Srinagar: Ghulam Rasool Pir of Magam, Handwara is fed up with repeated appeals to the concerned authorities for release of his son, Imran Ahmad who is languishing in Tihar jail.
Imran, an aeronautical engineer by profession, was arrested by the special cell of Delhi Police on November 16, 2006 on charges of his alleged affiliation with Lashkar-e-Toiba militant (LeT).
In October 2006, Ahmad got a job in Spice Jet, a private airline company. However, his merriment was short lived.
“Just few days before his joining, Delhi police arrested him. It was a real shock for us,” Pir said holding back his tears.
Imran was picked up from his rental flat at Dwaraka. Police said he was acting as a “conduit” for militants and recovered of Rs 4.5 lakh from his possession which the police claimed to have for militants. He was subsequently sent to Tihar jail by the police where he is currently under detention.
The police team was led by Inspector Mohan Sharma, who was killed during an encounter near Jamia Milia University, New Delhi last month. He also happened to be one of the witnesses about the alleged involvement of Imran.
However, Imran’s father Ghulam Rasool Pir denies his affiliation with any militant group and claims he was innocent and was arrested on fabricated charges.
“That is why I made several appeals to senior government officials of India,” Pir said, adding, “When I failed to assure police about his innocence, I approached the then president APJ Abdul Kalam who sought detailed report from the concerned authorities.”
Pir added the said official instead took time until the stint of president APJ Abdul Kalam was over.
“I again approached President Pratibha Patil and appealed her to take note of my son’s case. She inquired about the matter following which the police in its report alleged that my son was arrested with another Lashkar operative. They also alleged that ammunition was recovered from them,” he said.
Terming the police claim as false, Pir said, “The amount of rupees 4 lakh recovered from Imran which the police claims was meant for militants, was actually given to him by me for buying a flat after he got a job in Delhi.”
“Later they falsely charged him of having provided financial help to LeT. They also said he was an active cadre of the outfit,” he added.
