Flight delay: AI ordered to pay up

Kolkata: Air India (AI) will have to pay more than Rs one lakh to a person who missed a connecting flight from London to Montreal due to an Air India flight delay from Delhi to London.
Mr Nikhil Ranjan Pal, editor-in-chief of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) had reserved a ticket from Delhi to London on 1 August, 2005. On the same day he had an Air Canada (AC) flight from London to Montreal. He was scheduled to attend an IEEE meeting in Montreal between 2 and 5 October, 2005.
Soon after he arrived in London, Mr Pal found that the Air Canada flight had already left for Montreal as his AI flight was late.AI authorities had assured Mr Pal that they would arrange a ticket for him from London to Montreal the next day so Mr Pal could attend the meeting.
The next day AI authorities of London arranged a ticket for Mr Pal from London to Montreal by an AC flight. But the airline refused to take Mr Pal on grounds that he did not have a confirmed reservation. The AI authorities informed Mr Pal that they could arrange for a confirmed ticket from London to Montreal three days later. As Mr Pal was scheduled to return from Montreal to London on the same day, he didn't accept the ticket. Mr Pal returned to Delhi without attending the meeting. He demanded a fare refund from AI authorities but they didn't listen to him.
