New Delhi: The labour ministry is yet to ascertain whether the largescale sacking of Jet Airways employees breached labour laws.
Labour minister Oscar Fernandes said that his ministry was still examining the matter. ‘‘ The issue has been brought to my notice. There is a problem in the aviation industry, specifically Jet Airways, and we are inquiring into the matter,’’ Fernandes said at Delhi airport before leaving for Mumbai on Thursday.
Chief labour commissioner, Mumbai, B S Pawar told TOI that he had called a meeting of Jet management and workers on Friday to ascertain the facts of the case. ‘‘ I will be able to say something only after the meeting tomorrow,’’ he said.
Union labour secretary Sudha Pillai said the preliminary report that her department had received said 700 of the 1,900-odd retrenched Jet Airways employees were on probation, with less than one year in service. Of the 700 terminated employees on probation, 120 were ground staff and 578 were cabin crew.
Pillai said: ‘‘ If we find that those evicted were regular employees , then we will have to tell them (Jet Airways) that there has been a violation of labour laws....’’
She made it clear that probationers with less than one year’s experience could be retrenched without serving notice as this did not violate labour laws. ‘‘
