Kolkata: The fate of the country’s first Aerotropolis project at Andal will be decided after Coal India Limited presents its recommendations to the state government as well as the Centre.
The recommendations will be submitted within the next seven days, Mr Partha Sarathi Bhattacharya, Coal India, chairman said. “It is not that we do not want the project. The airport can be relocated but not the mines,” he said, while speaking on the sidelines of the inaugural session of the International Mining and Machinery Exhibition (IMME). Aerotropolis, a Rs 10,000 crore project by The Bengal Aerotropolis Project Limited, was given a green signal by the civil aviation ministry. However, the project ran into rough weather after Coal India Limited objected to it.
Mr Bhattacharya pointed out that Coal India Limited were yet to understand the impact of the project on underground mines of the coal-bearing area. He further expressed his apprehension that coal reserves of the area might become sterilised, if the project took off.
