Hyderabad: The Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum-I has directed Bangladesh Airlines to pay a compensation of Rs 20,877 within 30 days to a
city-based passenger for baggage loss. In case of delay in paying the compensation (Rs 13,877 for lost baggage, Rs 7,000 for mental agony, litigation cost and inconvenience), the Airlines will have to shell out 12 per cent interest per annum on the payout.
avanari Srinivas, a resident of Jyothi Colony near Picket in Secunderabad, went to Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand along with his family between April 29, 2007 and May 10, 2007. In the return journey to New Delhi from Bangkok via Dhaka, they checked in four bags on a Bangladesh Airlines flight. The connecting flight from Dhaka reached New Delhi seven hours behind schedule. To collect the luggage, it took them another hour. Srinivas and his family found that one of their bags was missing. Though it was reported to the Bangladesh Airlines authorities, they could not trace it.
Also, because of the delay in collecting the luggage and filing the complaint with the authorities concerned, the family missed Hyderabad-bound train at the Nizamuddin railway station. They were forced to travel by air.
On landing in the city, Srinivas filed a case with the district consumer disputes redressal forum-I, Hyderabad, demanding Rs 94,500 compensation towards the cost of the lost baggage. Besides, he demanded Rs 14,500 for the money he spent on the air tickets for flying to Hyderabad as they had missed the train because of the delay in collecting the luggage.
