Bureaucrat's cash 'stolen' in transit

Kolkata: State environment secretary Madan Lal Meena on Thursday lodged a theft complaint with the airport police station from Tokyo. He has
alleged that around Rs 3 lakh in cash and a gold chain have gone missing from the registered baggage that he had checked in at Kolkata airport on his way to Tokyo. He is in Japan on an official trip.
Meena boarded a Thai Airways flight to Bangkok at 1.55 am on Saturday and the registered luggage was checked in through to Tokyo. At Bangkok, he took another flight to Japan. He collected his luggage at Tokyo’s Narita Airport. On reaching the hotel, he discovered the theft.
"Meena said that after reaching Tokyo, he found that a small bag containing the valuables missing from his registered baggage," said an officer from NSCBI Airport police station. Police have summoned Air India officials, two security personnel and three loaders. They would be interrogated on Friday. AI is the ground handler for Thai Airways.
While confirming that airport police had directed the ground staff to report to the police station by 10.30 am on Friday, AI officials said Meena had not declared the valuables during check in. They also pointed out that there was no mention of whether the bag’s seal and lock had been tampered with.
