Mumbai: The Sahar police recently arrested two employees of a baggage delivery company working on contract with Jet airways, for stealing from a check-in baggage of a passenger.
Manoj Choudhary (28) and Laltun Jha were arrested on December 16 from their residence in Sahar village. The duo have been remanded in police custody.
The matter came to light when Akshita Shinde, who travelled from New York to London and then to Mumbai, found laptop, perfumes and chocolate boxes missing from her check-in luggage, which arrived four days after she landed in Mumbai. The chocolates and perfumes were collectively worth Rs 36,000. When Shinde received her baggage, it looked as safely packed as it was during the check-in.
Shinde (24), a student, then filed a police complaint. Investigations revealed that the contents of the bag were intact throughout the transit, but went missing when the baggage was being delivered to her house. "The airline could not send the bag from London to Mumbai. After it arrived in Mumbai, it was put through a routine screening process which revealed the presence of a laptop,'' senior police officer Dilip Patil said. "We realised that the theft took place when the baggage was handed over to the agency for home-delivery,'' he said."We are trying to find the stolen goods,'' said a police official.
Jet airways spokesperson said all the contents of the baggage were intact till the time it was in the airline's possession.
