Chennai: The Air Passengers Association of India (APAI) demanded the setting up of an Aviation Regulatory Authority of India to deal with all aspects of the industry.
D Sudhakar Reddy, president of the APAI, in his concluding address to the gathering at a discussion on the ``Ills of aviation sector ‘’ said the authority should be empowered to look into all aspects of aviation like flight schedules, safety measures, and consumer’s rights to provide efficient service.
He also urged the setting up of an Air Transportation Safety Board to manage the security aspects and a Competitive Commission to control issues like the merger of airlines.
The APAI also demanded the reopening of the old airports in Hyderabad and Bangalore. It also asked the central government for reduction in airfares and the removal of congestion surcharge. It also said the transaction fee, now being levied separately, should be a part of the airfare.
Former pilot and aviation expert Ranganathan, who also spoke at the discussion, slammed the union government and held it responsible for the mess the industry is in.
