Exporters highlight air cargo limitations

Lucknow: To boost exports in the state, Indian Industries Association (IIA) has sent a proposal to V Rajgopalan, Principal Secretary of Small Scale Industries and Export Promotion, informing him of the limitations faced by the state exporters in utilising the Air Freight Subsidy Scheme (AFSS). The scheme allows the exporters to use the air cargo facility in the airports at low rates.
The proposal highlights the inconvenience faced by exporters from Western UP when it comes to utilising the air cargo facility — which is available only in Lucknow and Varanasi.
The distance makes it difficult for the exporters of this region to use the facilities in the two cities. Moreover, in Lucknow and Varanasi, mostly flights are not available to those countries, with which the exporters conduct business. Thus, traders are also compelled to export through the air cargo facility in Delhi.
According to IIA, this situation renders the AFSS for the promotion of exports ineffective. “Since majority of exporters from UP are not able to avail this scheme, there is a need to extend the programme to the manufacturers who export through Air Cargo Complex in Delhi,” said D S Verma, IIA Exeutive Director.
