Indian Airlines to refund fare for cancelled flight

Chandigarh The District Consumer Disputes Redressal forum has directed the Indian Airlines to pay Rs 3,500 to the complainant for deficiency in services. The airlines has been directed to refund the appropriate fare for the journey from Chandigarh to Delhi, as the flight, in mention, was cancelled.
The complainant, Ashok Kumar Verma, said he purchased tickets to travel from Chandigarh to New Delhi, from Delhi to Goa, from Goa to Mumbai and from Mumbai to Chandigarh last year.
The flight was to take off on December 8, 2007. It was alleged that the flight was cancelled without any intimation and he was compelled to hire a taxi for Delhi. On July 10, he boarded a plane from Delhi to Goa and booked his luggage along with one wheelchair for his physically challenged son.
On reaching Goa, the complainant found that the wheel chair was not loaded in the aircraft by the ground staff. A complaint was lodged at the Goa Airport, where he was told that the wheelchair would be delivered on the following day.
Verma alleged that the hassles had ruined their plans to enjoy the holiday.
In its reply, the Indian Airlines said the flight was cancelled due to inclement weather and that it had assisted several passengers in arranging for taxis.
The forum said that since the flight was cancelled for which the airlines had charged the fare and the complainant had travelled at his own expenses by car, they are required to pay compensation for the taxi charges.
