Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Government will take up with the Centre immediate setting up of instrument landing system (ILS) at the international airport to enhance visibility range for smooth flight operations.
Governor N N Vohra said, "I will take up with union ministries of Civil Aviation and Defence the matter regarding immediate establishment of ILS and installation of approach lights and, high density and fog lights."
While reviewing the expansion of airport, he said the measures were necessary to enhance visibility range in view of its geographical and topographical location. The airport requires 2.2 km visibility for operation of all scheduled flights.
Stating that poor visibility was a concern, the governor said 75 to 80 flights, including Haj flights, were cancelled recently due to visibility problems.
The airport with a runway of 12,000 feet is being developed and expanded as an international one. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has undertaken works for the capacity addition of terminal building for handling 450 international passengers and 500 domestic passengers during peak hours.
The under-construction two storeyed terminal complex would have all modern amenities like aerobridges, inline X-ray, baggage inspection system and conveyors among others.
