AI witnesses ten per cent growth in domestic traffic at Hyderabad

According to a PTI report, Air India recently witnessed a ten per cent growth in domestic passenger traffic at GMR Hyderabad Airport, following reduction in airfares. “Our load-factor has gone up by around ten per cent, following drastic reduction in airfares late last year. Earlier, Air India was registering around 50 per cent load-factor, which is now over 60 per cent,” informed a National Aviation Company of India Limited (NACIL) official. The state-run airline had, on December 29, 2008 announced the reduction in basic fares by up to 82 per cent across its 19 domestic sectors including Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad.
The official stated that sectors such as Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai have seen good bookings in the last few days. Air India offers 1,800 seats through its 11 domestic flights from Hyderabad. “Last Sunday, we had 1,200 seats booked across our 11 domestic flights against a total seat capacity of 1,800. However, yield has not increased in proportion to the increase in load-factor. The number of passengers has certainly gone up but it has failed to translate into good revenue for the airlines due to steep fall in fares,” added the official.
