Cold food on flights, say passengers

Bangalore : Airlines passengers and crew have a grouse: they are getting cold food on flights. Airlines are watching their weight in a bid to cut cost. They are grounding ovens and other food equipment.
A senior pilot at Spice Jet on condition of anonymity said, "All the equipment that are used to keep or make food hot have been removed. Of late, I am being made to eat cold food, which is not good for a pilot who has to ensure the safety of over 150 lives."
When TOI spoke to senior Spice Jet officials they said, "Since we have always been serving light/cold meals there was no requirement of such heating equipment on board.''
The official added that the airline's fleet of aircraft had always had minimum heating equipment on board as a result of its low-cost model.
According to aviation analysts at consulting firm KPMG, in addition to removing heating equipment, airlines have altered aircraft take-off weight by removing extra seats from the cabin, switching to an entire paperless cockpit, removing seat-back phones and even down to flushing lavatories during extended delays to minimise take-off weight.
