Mysore: The National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC), which is building the terminal and air traffic control (ATC) tower at Mysore airport now under-construction, is delaying the commissioning of the workable airport.
According to the initial plans of the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the airport was to be commissioned by December-end. The date has now been revised to April. But even now, the functioning of the airport by April too, seems unlikely, going by the slow pace of the construction work.
NBCC was scheduled to complete the civil works and hand them over to AAI by the month-end, but now it is seeking extension of the deadline. Mysore MP C H Vijayashankar has now asked India's largest public sector construction company to get done the work by February-end and latest by mid-March.
The BJP MP, who reviewed the progress of Phase-I of the airport upgradation project, told TOI that NBCC was behind schedule in the construction work which in turn affected the operation of the airport. "I've asked them to complete the work on the ATC tower and terminal buildings by mid-March, so that we can get it ready for the launch," he said, adding that NBCC had attributed the delay to labour problems.
However, the holes in the perimeter wall that AAI is seeking to plug since long, has still not been attended to. AAI has left the holes for the movement of villagers in the vicinity of the airport at Mandakalli. Though MUDA was tasked to make alternative roads for the locals and close the holes, it was yet to take up the work. There was also a delay in meeting the water requirement for the project.
