IATA achieves the target of BCBP project for 2008

Mumbai: International Air Transport Association (IATA), the international body for the aviation industry was successful in achieving targets set for BCBP (Bar Coded Boarding Passes) project for 2008. The IATA Board Mandate aimed to move about 200 airlines to BCBP last year. Airlines across the world quickly picked up the BCBP standard introduced in 2005 and in less than three years more than 110 airlines implemented the system. IATA had set a target of 200 airlines last year.
Talking about the achieved targets, Albert Tjoeng, Manager, Corporate Communications, Asia Pacific, IATA said, “I'm happy to inform that IATA has exceeded the BCBP targets for 2008 and more than 200 airlines have issued BCBP last year. The current BCBP usage globally is 40 per cent, IATA is aiming to move it to 60 per cent by end of this year and 100 per cent by end of 2010. BCBP is one of the most cost effective way to operate during hard times of recession.” According to him, BCBP will save more than USD 1.5 billion annually for the industry when 100 per cent usage of bar coding will take effect. With regards to India, NACIL (National Aviation Company of India Ltd.), Kingfisher Airlines, Jet Airways and JetLite used BCBP on select routes in 2008.
In 2004, the IATA Board of Governors launched Simplifying the Business (StB) team to respond to mounting losses, high oil prices and low-cost competition. In 2006, BCBP format was endorsed by Joint Passenger Services Conference (JPSC) and aimed to make about 80 airlines BCBP capable, which was achieved by StB team.
