Jet readies pink slips for 50 expat pilots

Mumbai: The country’s largest full-service private carrier, Jet Airways, is likely to lay off 50 foreign pilots and maintenance engineers over the next six months. The move is part of the company’s efforts to cut costs due to declining passenger traffic and global slowdown.
There are nearly three-dozen expat pilots whose contracts will expire in March and a few more whose current term will run out in June this year. The carrier has decided not to renew the contracts of these foreign hands. The layoffs will come in two phases, a company source said.
Naresh Goyal-promoted Jet Airways employs over 1,000 pilots, including 780 Indians and 230 foreign pilots. It had laid off 32 foreign pilots in November last year.
A foreign pilot is paid a monthly salary of Rs 5 lakh plus accommodation allowance of Rs 2 lakh on average.
