Srinagar: The president of the National Conference, Dr. Abdullah, today said that the new government would complete work on the international airport in Srinagar urgently, and that direct flights to Dubai would be operated shortly.
He said that his party would not compromise on its autonomy agenda, but would have no objections if the people of Jammu and Kashmir come by a better alternative.
Talking to newsmen after meeting public delegations at the Nawa-e-Subhu complex, Dr. Abdullah said that the National Conference had assumed office for the betterment of the people and that public aspirations would be kept in mind at every cost.
Terming providing employment as the first priority of the new government, he said that rooting out joblessness was a challenge which the National Conference had accepted.
“The National Conference will not disappoint the jobless. All steps that are required in this context will be taken,” he said.
Dr. Abdullah said that the National Conference had come to agreement on seat sharing in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
“Under this agreement, we have decided to contest on three seats each, while the four seats in the Rajya Sabha will be shared on a fifty-fifty basis,” he said.
Describing autonomy as an acceptable solution to the Kashmir issue and as a “powerful weapon” of his party, Dr. Abdullah said that the National Conference would make no compromise on the autonomy agenda.
“But the party is prepared to abide by a better alternative if it is made available to the people of Kashmir,” he said.
