125 ornamental fish worth Rs 70,000 seized at airport

Chennai: Customs officials on Monday seized 125 ornamental fish from a passenger who had come from Singapore.
According to customs officials, Udhayakumar (35) of Kolathur, Chennai landed at the airport by an Indian Airlines flight around 10.30 pm. He told officials he was not carrying any dutiable items and tried to come out through the green channel.
However, the officials became suspicious over his behaviour and subjected his baggage to close examination. They found 125 live ornamental fish, popular in the Chennai market. The consignment was valued around Rs.70,000, sources said.
Customs officials then confiscated the fish and despatched them to Singapore by an early morning flight. The passenger was fined Rs 10,000, sources said.
