Additional fee for passengers at Mumbai airport soon

New Delhi: The government is likely to allow Mumbai’s airport developer to charge an additional fee from passengers to help it bridge its development fund deficit, a senior official said Wednesday.
It had recently allowed the airport developer in the national capital to charge a similar fee.
Following this, the Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), which operates Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, also sought permission to levy the fee to help fund its airport modernisation programme. The developer plans to levy Rs.375 on departing domestic passengers and Rs.1,000 on departing international passengers.
“We should expect something for MIAL soon. But we have not taken a final view on it yet,” said a senior official with the Airports Authority of India, the country’s airport operator.
The Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), the developer of the airport in the national capital, was Feb 9 given the green signal to charge ADC of Rs.200 on domestic passengers and Rs.1,300 per international flier from March 1. The development fee will be scrapped after 36 months. Both Delhi and Mumbai airports have reported deficits of about Rs.20 billion (Rs.2,000 crore). Upgrading these two airports, which handle 55 percent of India’s airline passengers, is expected to cost a total of Rs.114 billion (Rs.11,400 crore).
