Chennai: Airports Authority of India (AAI) will soon start construction of the new international terminal adjacent to the existing terminal, with the state government clearing the way for the acquisition of 20 acres of defence land for the purpose.
The works are part of the ongoing Rs 1,212-crore airport expansion project. According to government sources, 72 acres of land would be provided to defence ministry at Pallavaram on the ECR in exchange of 20 acres which would be transferred to the AAI for building the new international terminal. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting convened by the state government at the secretariat on Tuesday.
According to AAI officials, construction was in progress on the airport campus and the works would be completed by 2011, the deadline for the project. Land has been marked and earth is being moved to prepare the ground for building a new 74,500-square metres domestic terminal. It will have two floors first floor for departure and the ground floor for arrivals.
The expansion project is being executed by Consolidated Construction Consortium Limited (CCCL) in technical collaboration with Canadian infrastructure company Herve Pomerleau International.
Once the project is complete, Chennai airport will become world-class, with passengers lounging in steel-andglass terminals that will have natural lighting.
