Jaipur: Jaisalmer is all set to have its own civil airport equipped with latest facilities from next year onwards. Airports Authority of India (AAI) has already kicked off the first phase of construction work that includes a terminal building and the runway. The building has been designed with a capacity to handle passengers of an Airbus 320 and a Boeing 80 aircraft at a time.
Airport officials have confirmed that structure of the airport would have a local flavour. "The structures will give a glimpse of the city's grand old architecture. It will be a complete blend of modern and local art," said the official. He further added that the new terminal will have a state-of-the-art design and will use glass extensively, which would ensure that there will be sufficient natural light in during days to conserve energy. The building would have enough space for facilities like shops, game parlours, ticketing counters, parking and check-in counters.
The state government has already handed over 60 acre land that is required for the first phase of the airport development. AAI has approved Rs 81 crore for the first phase of work. The airport has been constructed keeping in mind the future demands in air travel. This new building would be sufficient to handle the passenger traffic for a decade.
Like Udaipur, the new building would be well-equipped with the latest facilities available in the world. "The entire terminal building would be centrally air-conditioned. There will be two elevators to take passengers to the exit lounge and the aerobridge," added an official.
