Dubai: A 38-year-old Indian stood trial in the Criminal Court of First Instance on the charges of attempting to bribe a public official.
As per the court records, the case dates back to November 26 last year when the defendant was travelling by transit through Dubai International Airport.
He allegedly offered $500 to a security officer at the airport to allow him, along with five of his other travellers, to board a flight bound for Peru via Rome.
A security officer who was on duty at the airport that day had testified encountering the five Indian passengers at about 8.30am.
“After I checked their passports I told them to wait so I could call the Rome airport officials to check if they had visas,” he testified, while adding that the defendant then offered him $500 to let them board the flight.
The security officer immediately informed his supervisor about the matter. Earlier, the defendant had stated to the Public Prosecution that it was the airport officer who had asked for the money.
