Nagpur airport transfer by month-end

Nagpur: Civil aviation minister Praful Patel on Thursday gave a categorical assurance that Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport will be handed over to the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) by February 28.The decision was received amid applause by peoples’ representatives cutting across party lines present at a meeting called by Patel at the airport’s arrival lounge. Airport Authority of India chairman V P Agarwal, joint secretary of civil aviation ministry Arun Mishra, MADC’s vice-chairman and managing director R C Sinha were the officials who briefed the meeting about the latest situation.
Patel admitted that some technical tangles had delayed the airport transfer. “But now I will ensure it that the process is expedited and the handing over procedure is completed by this month end,” he announced.
The union cabinet had given an in-principle approval to the airport transfer in January last year. But the then finance minister P C Chidambaram had raised the issue of valuation of the AAI and the MADC’s assets before the physical transfer.
